List of States with Compressed Biogas (CBG) Supportive Policies in India
The Indian central government has introduced various policy measures to encourage growth and investment in the Compressed Biogas (CBG) sector. Key initiatives include the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas’s SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s National Bioenergy Programme, which aims to produce 15 million metric tonnes of CBG from 5,000 plants by 2030. Despite these efforts, progress has been slow, with only 115 CBG projects operational as of early 2025, falling significantly short of the 5,000-plant target.
Alongside central policies, some states have introduced their own policies to support the installation of CBG projects. These policies provide extra incentives on top of the existing central schemes. Currently, only six states in India have bioenergy policies dedicated to promoting CBG, with the details outlined below:
